Josh Kelly avenged his defeat to Thomas Beaney in the CYP finals to take home the National Junior ABA title.
Last year Kelly lost out to the West Ham boxer by three points but he took full advantage of his chance for revenge by dominating this rematch, winning by a clear 11 point margin.
Kelly was fantastic. He worked well with his jab, was quick to the punch as Beaney stepped in and in the latter stages picked it up and started throwing more punches to the head and body.
The Houghton boxer said: “I feel I boxed great. I was fit and strong and boxed well behind the jab. Since he narrowly beat me in the CYP finals by three points and is a decent boxer, to win comfortably by 11 points was unreal.
“Next year I’m eligible for the senior ABA’s and I’ve already started fighting open seniors. I’ve had two fights, won one and narrowly lost on a majority decision against the senior ABA finalist, so I’m feeling very positive about entering the competition next year.”
As for the rest of this year Josh is looking towards his second Tri-nation title. He is also looking to the future and dreams of making the Olympic Games. He said: “The ultimate dream in any amateur boxer’s career is to reach the Olympics.
“Now I’m at the top of boxing, I feel as though with a lot of hard work and dedication, I can reach it. After that turning pro and really making my name in boxing would be a dream come true.
“I would just like to thank my Dad, Ray Major and Kenny Allen for all the training and effort they put in, helping me reach these stages. Hopefully there’s more to come.”

By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten American heavyweight knockout artist Deontay Wilder (21-0, 21 KO’s) will test his talent against the tough can capable Chad Van Sickle (23-9-3, 12 KO’s) in a scheduled 8 round bout on May 26th in Cancun, Mexico.
There had been rumors floating around the internet about the 26-year-old Wilder possibly facing 35-year-old Owen Beck, but that news turned out to be completely bogus. Van Sickle is a tougher opponent in my view than Beck. Van Sickle, 34, can punch a little, and he even held heavyweight contender Chauncy Welliver to a 10 round draw in 2006. That tells you that Van Sickle has some ability, because Welliver is a good sound heavyweight. Van Sickle has been in with the best, such as Brian Minto, Odlanier Solis and Shaun George. Right now he’s going through a slight rough patch in his career with six losses in his last eight fights, but believe me, Van Sickle is better than that.
The 6’7″ Wilder, a former 2008 U.S heavyweight Olympian, has won all 21 of his pro fights by knockout. He’s blessed with arguably the best right hand in the heavyweight division and in all of boxing. Although he’s taking some heat for his slow approach to a title shot, it’s not big deal because he’s being groomed for an eventual title shots.
Wilder only had less than 20 fights as an amateur, so he’s still learning how to fight at this point. You’re not going to rush a talent like Wilder into fights that he’s not ready for if you can help it. While I see Wilder’s right hand getting him past pretty much everyone in the division in terms of contenders, it’ll be much easier once he’s developed his left hand more and learned how to defend. But with just his right hand alone, Wilder is almost unbeatable because it only takes one big shot from him to end a fight. He doesn’t need to be perfect. All he needs to do is land that cannon of a right hand and he’ll be alright.

Last night, Bam Boxing Promotions attempted to resurrect the careers of two hall of famers, Cassius Clay and Ray Robinson.
Brittney Rogers, the youngest female promoter in boxing, didn’t resurrect Sugar Ray Robinson from the grave and she didn’t miraculously find a cure for Parkinson’s disease so that Muhammad Ali could fight again.
She did however promote a card with two fighters who shared the same name as these legends. Ray Robinson would have made Sugar proud, Cassius Clay proved to be the exact opposite of Muhammad Ali.
The results of last night’s card follows below.
Oscar Pagan (0-0) vs. Ben Lovett (0-0); Junior Middleweight
Camden native Oscar Pagan made his professional debut against Philadelphia native Ben Lovett in the opening bout of the night. Both fighters fought out of the orthodox stance, and it was also visually apparent from the beginning that neither had a ton of experience. Pagan tried to keep Lovett at bay with his jab and was able to bloody the nose of Lovett in the first round, but Lovett applied more pressure and was by far the more aggressive fighter. Lovett landed a few heavy right hands and combinations by the ropes in rounds 3 and 4, and he fought like a bull in a china shop. Lovett’s aggression forced the judges to see the fight in his favor, and he won the bout with scores of 38-38, 40-36, and 39-37.
DeCarlo Perez (6-2-1) vs. Lenwood Dozier( 7-4-1); Junior Middleweight
Dozer came out strong in the first round, landing a two punch combination early and was more accurate in landing his counter punches. However as the fight wore on, Dozier threw less and less combos and focused on throwing one punch at a time and attempting to avoid the combinations of Perez. Perez maintained a steady body attack throughout the bout. At one point during the fifth round Dozier could be seen taunting Perez, but he was not doing anything at that time to back up his talk. There was little surprise when the scores were announced of 60-54, 59-55, and 59-55.
Cassius Clay (0-2) vs. Hasan Young (0-0); Junior Welterweight
Names can be deceiving, and the Cassius Clay that stepped into the ring on Saturday night should never, ever, ever be confused with man known as Muhammad Ali.
The debuting Hasan Young battered Clay from corner to corner, and in every single round. By the second round the fans knew that Clay had no chance. A blistering combination by Young in the third round caused Clay to take a knee in the corner and receive a standing eight count. Clay was in total retreat by the fourth round, and Young’s domination showed on the scorecards when it was announced he won with scores of 40-34, 40-33, and 40-34.
Kareem Cooley (2-1) vs. Tevin Farmer (4-3-1); Lightweight
Kareem Cooley, a southpaw, took on Tevin Farmerin the last bout of the undercard. Cooley was the taller fighter, and was able to use it to possibly win the first round by using effective jabs and avoiding the rushing Cooley. Farmer however was undaunted, and he continued to apply pressure and trapped Cooley several times and unleashed combination to the body and head. Many of the rounds were close, but Farmer likely won them due to his aggression. By the sixth round Farmer was the fresher fighter, and was also engaging in some showboating for the judges and fans. The fight was closer than the scores showed, but Farmer took the victory with scores of 59-55, 58-56, and 59-55.
Terrance Cauthen (36-7) vs. Ray Robinson (13-2); Pennsylvania Welterweight Title
When I last saw Ray Robinson fight, he was on the undercard of a NBC Sports Network card and struggled against an older veteran that he should have been able to beat easily.
He has vastly improved since then.
He was able to regroup, and show his true potential in tonight’s main event. He took on Terrance “the Heat” Cauthen, another southpaw and a Bronze medalist from the 1996 Olympics. He was a fighter who should have been an extremely tough opponent for Robinson.
Robinson showed that he’s an accurate puncher in the first round, and easily won that round from the experienced veteran. The second round featured some confusion on the part of the referee, as Robinson slipped to the ground and the referee tried to step in between Cauthen and Robinson. They both landed a punch on each other while the referee was in between them, but Robinson had a point taken away from him for his foul.
Cauthen appeared to be a little dazed from that punch, but it did not appear to land enough to cause serious damage. Robinson was obviously upset at being docked a point, and came back with a straight left hand that cleanly knocked Cauthen down. When Cauthen got back up to beat the count, Robinson landed a vicious two punch combination that put Cauthen down for good.
Ray Robinson won the Pennsylvania Welterweight Title with a KO in the second round at 2:06.

AIBA PR & Communications Department sent out the following:
Qinhuangdao, China, 10 May 2012 – The 7th edition of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships will be held in Qinhuangdao, China, where record number of boxers and countries are expected to participate. With women’s boxing making its debut at the London 2012 Olympic Games, this event will also double up as the qualification tournament for three weight categories, Flyweight, Lightweight and Middleweight.
343 woman boxers from 77 nations entered this historic event in China with these numbers smashing all previous records. Joining the host nation will be Hungary, India, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine, who will be competing with the maximum number of ten boxers while Canada, France, Kenya, Romania and United States will send nine representatives each. Australia and Vietnam will be competing with eight while DPR Korea, Germany, Poland, Serbia and Venezuela travel to this qualification event with seven athletes. (Please take note that these figures have been taken before the general weigh-in).
New nations will be competing for the very first time as Afghanistan, Armenia, Austria, Bolivia, Colombia, DR Congo, Honduras, Jamaica, Nigeria, Serbia, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Uzbekistan all look to make an impact on the world stage.
With women’s boxing making its debut at the London 2012 Olympic Games, huge media interest will be bestowed on these championships. 2012 will mark a watershed moment in the history of the sport.
AIBA announced that boxing would be separated into men and women events at its 13th congress held in Beijing in 1994. The first official international tournament for women boxers was then held in 1997 with the inaugural AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships taking place four years later in Scranton, USA. After six successful editions, AIBA is now organising the first Olympic qualification tournament for women boxers in conjunction with the event in Qinhuangdao.
Following the International Olympic Committee’s decision in 2009 to include women’s boxing into the Olympic program, the sport has reached a new phase in its development with a huge increase in the number of participants worldwide.
Although celebrating the crowning of ten World Champions across all weight categories, this AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships will have special significance for the Flyweight (51KG), Lightweight (60KG) and Middleweight (75KG) divisions.
In the Olympic Flyweight class, India’s five-time AIBA World Champion, 29-year-old living legend Mary Kom Chungneijang is one of the big favourites in the competition but will expect some tough competition when she takes to the ring in China. England’s current European Champion and two-time AIBA World Championships silver medallist Nicola Adams is unbeaten since February 2011, while China’s two-time AIBA World Champion Ren Cancan, Poland’s former AIBA World Champion Karolina Michalczuk, and Russian AIBA World Champion Yelena Savelyeva, will all seek to get those all-important quota places and challenge for the World Title. Each one has gold medal aspirations in Qinhuangdao.
US National Olympic Trials winner Marlen Esparza is the most experienced boxer in her team, while France’s European Championships silver medallist Sarah Ourahmoune, Romania’s European Champion Steluta Duta and DPR Korea’s AIBA World Championships silver medallist Kim Hye Song are also all medal contenders.
Bulgaria’s EU Champion Stoyka Petrova, Thailand’s Asian Indoor Games winner Peamwilai Laopeam, Canada’s Panamerican Games winner Mandy Bujold, Argentina’s multiple Panamerican Champion Paola Benavides, Philippines’ Nesty Petecio, Finland’s AIBA World Championships bronze medallist Hanne Maekinen, Germany’s tough Azize Nimani and Ukraine’s European Champion Tatyana, are all also excellent boxers that have the skills to cause upsets at these AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.
At Lightweight, Irish national icon, three-time AIBA World Champion and five-time European Champion Katie Taylor will face a flurry of quality rivals with Russia’s two-time AIBA World Champion Sofya Ochigava and Turkey’s two-time AIBA World Champion Gulsum Tatar both serious threats. Taylor met Ochigava twice in the past two years and both have one win to their names.
India’s former AIBA World Champion, Sarita Devi Laishram, moved up three weight classes this year and won the gold medal at the Asian Championships in March so will be expected to go far in Qinhuangdao where the host nation’s best fighter, Dong Cheng, will also want to show her pedigree.
England’s Olympic Test Event winner Natasha Jonas, Tajikistan’s 19-year-old Asian Champion Mavzuna Choriyeva, Brazil’s multiple Panamerican Champion Adriana Araujo and Puerto Rico’s Panamerican Games winner Kiria Tapia are very dangerous rivals for the division’s top favourites. Morocco’s Hasna Lachgar won the last four competitions she entered while Sweden’s two-time European Championships bronze medallist Helena Falk and Romania’s former AIBA World Champion Mihaela Lacatus have returned to the world of boxing to try and compete at the Olympic Games.
In the Middleweight class, a huge number of world class fighters will be competing for those quota places. Canada’s three-time AIBA World Champion Mary Spencer, who trains sixteen times a week, Russia’s AIBA World Heavyweight Champion Nadezhda Torlopova, China’s former AIBA World Champion Li Jinzi, Brazil’s Light Heavyweight World Champion Roseli Feitosa, Hungary’s two-time AIBA World Champion Maria Kovacs and Sweden’s veteran World Champion Anna Laurell, will all be looking for gold medals and trying to qualify for London 2012.
Despite this jaw-dropping list of names, all the talk will be of 17-year-old US teenager Claressa Shields, who has been installed as the top favourite. The teenage superstar has sent shockwaves through the sport with her recent awe-inspiring performances. She won the National Olympic Trials and secured the gold medal at the Panamerican Championships in Canada, where she triumphed over legend Mary Spencer in sensational style. The extremely strong Shields is still unbeaten and travels to China with her sights firmly set on taking gold.
England’s AIBA World Championships silver medallist Savannah Marshall moved up a weight class and now has great expectations in China. Netherlands’ European Championships silver medallist Nouchka Fontijn and Dominican Republic’s Panamerican Games silver medallist Yenebier Guillen will also be gunning for glory.
Azerbaijan’s former Russian National Champion Yelena Vystropova, Kazakhstan’s Asian Champion Dariga Shakimova, Norway’s European Champion Lotte Lien, India’s Asian Championships silver medallist Pooja Rani and Ukraine’s AIBA World Championships bronze medallist Liliya Durnyeva must not be discarded in this division.
It promises to be a spectacular show with the cream of the crop of women’s boxing taking to the canvas for two weeks of top quality action.
